Water heaters in Washington, IL come down to one decision: repair a worn part or replace the tank. A relief valve, thermostat, heating element or anode rod can be repaired. A tank that leaks from its body is finished. We repair tank units, replace them, and install tankless heaters, and you hear which path fits before any work starts.

Repair or Replace: How Do You Decide?

Repair when a part has failed and the tank is sound. Replace when the steel tank itself has given out. Most calls fit one of these:

  • Repair: a pilot that will not stay lit, a failed thermocouple, thermostat or heating element, a dripping relief valve, a leaking drain valve, a spent anode rod.
  • Replace: water seeping from the tank body or its seams, rusty hot water together with a damp base, or a unit that keeps needing parts.
  • Flush first: popping or rumbling usually means mineral sediment on the bottom of the tank. A flush can quiet it. Heavy buildup is also a sign of age.

The data plate on a tank shows its size, fuel and when it was built.

Read the data plate for the build date before you decide. Tanks that are near the end of their range and show rust or moisture at the base are rarely worth a repair bill. Our water heater repair page covers each failure in detail, and water heater installation covers the replacement side. If you want endless hot water and have the gas and venting for it, read about tankless water heaters.

Rebates and Credits to Confirm Before You Buy

Today's Homeowner estimates water heater installation at $772 to $1,931, which is an estimate, not government data and not our quote. Size, fuel, venting and access decide the real number.

Ameren Illinois lists a $50 rebate on a new ENERGY STAR gas storage or gas tankless water heater, one per household, for units bought by December 31 and claimed within 60 days. It also lists a $1,150 instant discount on an ENERGY STAR heat pump water heater through participating contractors (Ameren Illinois Energy Efficiency Program, as of 2026). Confirm both with Ameren before you buy, since program terms change.

The federal 25C and 25D credits expired on December 31, 2025, so do not count on a tax credit for a unit installed now.

Water Heaters Questions

How long does a tank water heater last?
Many tanks run roughly ten to fifteen years, and less where heavy mineral buildup or a spent anode rod speeds up corrosion. The data plate on the tank shows when it was made. A heater near that range that starts leaking from the tank body is not worth repairing, because the steel itself has failed.
Should I choose a gas or electric water heater?
Stay with the fuel the house already has unless you are also changing the gas line or venting. A gas unit needs a flue or vent path and a gas supply. An electric unit needs a suitable circuit and no vent. Running costs depend on current gas and electric rates, so check both before you decide.
Is a tankless water heater worth it in a cold climate?
It can be, but it needs honest sizing. Winter water entering a Central Illinois home is much colder than summer water, so a tankless unit has to heat it further and delivers less flow at the same temperature. Gas line size and venting also add to the job. Our tankless page walks through the trade-offs.
What do I do first if my water heater is leaking?
Close the cold water shutoff valve on the pipe above the tank and turn off the electric breaker if the heater is electric. Then call. If the water comes from the tank body, it needs replacing. If it comes from a fitting, valve or relief valve discharge, a repair may be enough.
