Drain and sewer problems in Washington, IL fall into two groups: a clog in one fixture's branch line, and trouble in the main sewer line every fixture shares. Sewer and drain work is the core of what we do, and the first job is telling which group you are in, because the tool, the cost and the next step all follow from that.

Drain and Sewer Work in a Town of Mixed Ages

Washington has a real mix of pipe. The Census figures cited by Point2homes put the median home at 1978, with 13% of units from 1939 or earlier and the largest group built between 2000 and 2009. Older homes often have clay tile or cast iron that roots and scale attack, while newer homes have plastic drains that clog from grease and wipes.

Knowing which you have decides the plan: a cable for roots, a jetter for buildup, a camera for a line you do not trust, and a repair when the pipe itself has failed.

Rules to Know Before You Hire

Illinois requires a plumbing license for anyone who repairs plumbing, and the Illinois Department of Public Health administers it. Ask for the number and check it. A proposed Washington ordinance would address private sewer laterals; it is not confirmed as law, so ask the city about its status before you plan work around it.

“Just a superb experience in quality and customer service and price. Called these guys at 5:30p and they were here by 6:00p and Monte did his work in the dark by flashlight! Not only did he do a fantastic job he also educated us on how to prevent these problems from becoming a much bigger and more expensive issue. I would recommend this company to anyone, they are committed to doing a professional job, ensuring it is done right and with very affordable prices.”

“Monte and Hunter came out on a Sunday (morning no less!) to help us with a mess from a backed up sewer. Lots of roots! They used two different sized cutters with a monster snake and cleaned it out all the way to the city sewer. We'd had another "sewer service" a few weeks ago and the experience was night and day different. I definitely recommend them.”

“Called at 4pm, clean out was finished by 7:30! Very reasonably priced. Monty was great!”

Drain and Sewer Questions

How do I tell a drain clog from a sewer line problem?
Count the fixtures. One slow sink or tub is a drain clog in a branch line. Several fixtures slowing together, a floor drain that gurgles when upstairs water runs, or a toilet that bubbles when the tub drains points to the main sewer line. If you are unsure, describe what you see when you call and we will tell you which it sounds like.
What should I do if sewage is coming up into the house right now?
Stop using water, including toilets, sinks and the washer, and keep people and pets out of the wet area. Do not run a dishwasher or load of laundry to see if it clears. Then call us. Our emergency sewer backup page covers what to do while you wait, and photographs help if you plan an insurance claim.
Do I need a camera inspection or a cleaning first?
If the line is blocked, clean it first, because a camera cannot see through roots, grease or standing sewage. If the line runs but keeps clogging, or if you are buying the house, scope it. Cleaning answers what is blocked, and the camera answers why. Many jobs use both, and you decide on the second after seeing the first.
How do I check that a plumber is licensed to work on my sewer?
Illinois requires a license for anyone who plans, installs, alters or repairs plumbing. Ask for the license number, which must also appear in plumbing advertising, and check it on the Illinois Department of Public Health's public lookup. Do the same before you hire anyone for sewer excavation, since digging up a lateral is plumbing work under the state's plumbing license law.
