We cover plumbing in Pekin, IL from our base in Washington, about 19 miles and 25 minutes south and west. Pekin is the Tazewell County seat and its largest city, and its sewers are the first thing we ask about: a large part of town runs on combined lines, and in June 2026 the city council chose to keep its wastewater system rather than sell it to Illinois American Water.

Plumbing in Pekin Starts With a Sewer System in Motion

Pekin sits on the east bank of the Illinois River, and a large share of the city is served by combined sewers that carry storm water and household waste in one pipe. The city's Court Street combined sewer overflow project was reported on track to finish by the end of 2026.

Illinois American Water proposed buying the city's wastewater system in 2026, including its two treatment plants and its sanitary and combined lines. In June the council unanimously turned that down, so the city keeps the pipes. Either way, the lateral from your house to the main is normally yours.

What Rail-Era Blocks and Postwar Houses Do to Drains

A railroad built into Pekin in 1898, and the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimate puts 21 percent of the city's homes before 1940, another 20 percent in the 1950s and 21 percent in the 1970s. Iron and clay laterals from those decades scale up and let roots in. Hydro jetting scours scale that a snake only cuts a hole through.

The ground adds its own load. Pekin sits near 538 feet on the river, over the sand and gravel that the area's wells draw from, and in 1995 the city adopted Illinois' first overlay zoning ordinance to protect that groundwater. When the river rises, groundwater rises with it, so sump pits run longer.

The National Weather Service ties specific Pekin problems to the Peoria gauge. Damage begins at the city's sewage treatment plant at 25 feet. At 29 feet water overtops the Pekin and LaMarsh levee at the railroad crossing and Constitution Avenue floods. At 30 feet it tops the plant's levee. That record crest of 29.35 feet in April 2013 came within inches of the plant's levee mark.

Before you dig near a cleanout, call JULIE at 811 to have buried lines marked, and check with the city on permits.

Down Illinois 29 to the Tazewell County Seat

We head southwest from Washington on US 24, then follow Illinois 29 through East Peoria and Creve Coeur into Pekin. Court Street is Illinois 9 and crosses the river on the McNaughton Bridge, while Illinois 29 overlaps it briefly in the city, so tell us your street before we pick a route. Landmarks help too: Mineral Springs Park, the courthouse, the Pekin Depot or Pekin Hospital will do.

A backwater valve is a one-way gate in the sewer line that closes when the main surges. Whether yours fits depends on where the floor drains sit, and a camera inspection shows that first. City Hall at 111 S Capitol Street lists utility billing and building permits among its services. Pekin is the seat of Tazewell County, and we also work in Creve Coeur on the way down.

What Customers Say About Us

4.8 out of 5 from 16 Google reviews, checked November 2026. Read all reviews

“Monte and Hunter came out on a Sunday (morning no less!) to help us with a mess from a backed up sewer. Lots of roots! They used two different sized cutters with a monster snake and cleaned it out all the way to the city sewer. We'd had another "sewer service" a few weeks ago and the experience was night and day different. I definitely recommend them.”

“Gary at Professional Sewer & Drain Services successfully bailed me out of a backed up sewer multiple times. Great guy and reasonable rates - very trustworthy!”
Paul M., Google review, about 10 years ago
“Just a superb experience in quality and customer service and price. Called these guys at 5:30p and they were here by 6:00p and Monte did his work in the dark by flashlight! Not only did he do a fantastic job he also educated us on how to prevent these problems from becoming a much bigger and more expensive issue. I would recommend this company to anyone, they are committed to doing a professional job, ensuring it is done right and with very affordable prices.”

Plumbing Questions in Pekin

Who owns the sewer pipe under my Pekin yard?
The main under the street belongs to the City of Pekin, whose council voted in June 2026 not to pursue a sale of the wastewater system. The lateral from your foundation to that main is normally the owner's to maintain. If a backup starts, a cleaning and a camera run usually show which side the trouble sits on before anyone argues about it.
Does a combined sewer mean my basement will flood?
Not by itself, but it raises the risk. A large part of Pekin runs on combined pipes that carry rain and household waste together, so a big storm can fill them and push water back toward low drains. A clear lateral and, where it fits, a backwater valve are the usual defenses.
How long does the drive from Washington to Pekin take?
About 25 minutes in normal conditions, roughly 19 miles. We go through East Peoria and Creve Coeur on the US 24 and Illinois 29 corridor, then into town. A train crossing or a closed lane can add minutes, so tell us your street when you call and we will say what the day looks like.
