Burst pipe repair in Washington, IL starts with the water off at the main shutoff valve, before anything else. In a Central Illinois winter, the split is most often a supply line that froze, and the water pours out once it thaws. Close the valve, open a few taps, take photos, and call us.
What Do You Do in the First Minutes After a Pipe Bursts?
Shut off the water, then reduce the damage. Work through these steps:
- Close the main shutoff valve. It is usually where the water line enters the house, often on the basement wall near the meter. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
- Open the lowest tap. Run the cold faucets to drain what is left in the lines. A basement utility sink or an outdoor hose bib works.
- Turn off the water heater. Cut power at the breaker, or set a gas heater to off or pilot, so the tank does not run dry.
- Kill power to wet areas if you can do it safely. Do not walk through standing water to reach a panel. Call the utility or an electrician if the panel is wet.
- Photograph everything. Take wide and close shots of the pipe, the water, the wet walls and the damaged belongings before you clean.
- Move what you can. Lift rugs and furniture off wet floors, and pull belongings out of the water's path.
- Call us. Tell us which floor, whether the water is stopped and whether you can see the split.

If you do not know where your main valve is, find out now.
Why Do Supply Lines Freeze and Split in Washington?
The cold season here runs from about December 1 to March 1, with average highs under 43°F and a January average low of 15.8°F (Weather Spark and Plantmaps). Ice expands as it forms, and copper or plastic pipe that is full of water cannot expand with it. The pipe splits, often lengthwise, in the section where the ice formed.
The weak spots are the same in most houses:
- Pipe in exterior walls, especially on the north side
- Crawl spaces and unheated rooms over garages
- Basement rim joists where cold air leaks in
- Outdoor hose bibs and the lines feeding them
- Supply lines that run through unheated attics or additions
A freeze split usually shows only after the ice melts. Water that was blocked starts flowing through the crack, and a house that looked fine at 5°F can flood on a thaw. If a pipe froze, close the main valve before you warm anything, and read our frozen pipe thawing page for the safe way to thaw it. Never use an open flame.

What Burst Pipe Repair Includes, and Where It Stops
Burst pipe repair covers the failed line from the shutoff to the pressure test. The visit stops at the plumbing, and you should know that before the first cut.
- Finding the split, and any second split on the same run
- Opening access sized to the pipe, not the whole room
- Cutting back to sound pipe on both sides and fitting new pipe or a coupling
- Bringing the line back up slowly and checking every joint, hidden ones included
- Naming the cause, whether that is missing insulation, a cold gap or a line that needs a new route
Drywall, texture and paint are finish trades, and drying falls to a restoration company or your own fans. We show you the wet material and leave the openings clean and accessible. When a whole run froze or old pipe keeps failing, whole house repiping may be the better plan, and we say so.
How Does Burst Pipe Repair Work Once We Arrive?
We stop the loss, locate the split, repair it and prove the line holds:
- Confirm the water is off and check that the lines are drained.
- Trace the break. Wet drywall, a pressure test and moisture readings narrow the area. If the cause is not obvious, our leak detection process applies.
- Open a small access. The cut is sized to the pipe, not the room.
- Cut out the damaged section. We cut back to sound pipe, because a pipe near a split is often weakened too.
- Install new pipe and fittings. The repair uses new pipe or a coupling suited to the material.
- Restore pressure, test and explain. We bring the water up slowly, check every joint, look for a second split and show you what froze or failed.

One split often means others. A pipe that froze in one spot usually froze along a run, so we check the length of the line and the pipes beside it.
Why Do We Cut Into the Wall or Ceiling?
Because a split pipe cannot be repaired through drywall. A repair needs sound pipe on both sides of the break, room to work a fitting and enough light to see the result. A small, clean opening is faster than a patch of guesses, and it is easier to repair afterward.

Wet insulation and drywall that held water also need to come out.
What Is the 48-Hour Drying Window?
Drying must start almost immediately. Wet drywall soaks up water within hours, and wet framing risks microbial growth after about 48 hours. Remove wet insulation and soaked flooring, run fans and dehumidifiers, and have the moisture checked with a meter. A wall can look dry while the studs inside are still wet.
Photograph the damage before anything is thrown out. Keep damaged items until your insurer tells you otherwise, and ask them what documents they need. Many policies cover a sudden burst and exclude slow seepage, so check yours.

What Does Burst Pipe Repair Cost?
Published estimates put burst pipe repair at $788 to $3,154 (Today's Homeowner, estimates, not government data). That is a third-party range, not our quote. The spread comes from a few things:
- How much pipe is damaged. One split costs less than a long freeze run.
- Where it is. Basement joists are quicker than a tiled wall or ceiling.
- Pipe material. Copper, PEX and galvanized pipe each need different fittings.
- Water damage. Drying and rebuilding are not plumbing, and are often the largest part of the loss.
Washington's housing adds its own spread. A 2000s home with PEX in open joists is a different job from a pre-1940 house with galvanized behind plaster, where the old pipe may need a transition fitting or more replacement than the split alone. A hard freeze can also damage more than one line.

Does a Burst Pipe Repair Need a Permit in Washington?
It depends on the scope, so ask the city before the wall closes. Washington permits last six months and can be renewed, contractors register with the city, and rough-in plumbing must pass inspection first. A short section swapped in an open joist bay is a different question from new pipe run through a wall.
State rules apply either way. The Illinois Department of Public Health requires a license for anyone who repairs plumbing under 225 ILCS 320, and says plumbing contractors must register and carry liability and workers' compensation coverage. Ask any plumber for the license number and proof of that coverage, and keep both with your insurance claim file.
How Do You Keep It From Happening Again?
Insulate the pipes that froze, seal the air leak that let the cold in and know your main valve. Open cabinet doors on exterior walls during a hard freeze, and let a faucet drip when the forecast is far below freezing. The frozen pipes prevention guide has the full checklist. If the same run keeps freezing, replacing or rerouting it is the real fix.
