We handle plumbing in Chillicothe, IL from 309 Wilshire Dr in Washington, about 18 miles and 25 minutes away. What makes the trip and the work different is the river: no road bridge crosses the Illinois at Chillicothe, so we cross at Peoria, and the town runs its own seven wells, which brings scale and water-heater wear to the front of most calls here.
Plumbing in Chillicothe Starts With Well Water and the Santa Fe Pump House
Chillicothe runs its own water from seven wells. City council agendas list repairs to the Santa Fe and Chestnut pump houses and to a Santa Fe well, along with a water testing contract. Deep wells in this region usually run hard, though we have no verified hardness figure for Chillicothe, so a test settles it.
Hard water leaves chalky scale on aerators and in the bottom of a tank water heater, where it insulates the burner and shortens the heater's life. The signs are a rumbling tank, slow flow at a faucet and white crust on the shower head. A water softener installation is one answer, but test first so you buy what the water needs.

Flushing the tank once the scale has set is a harder job than flushing it early; the earlier you ask, the more of the heater we can save.
A softener is not the answer to everything. In August 2026 the city reported that one well tested high for two PFAS chemicals, PFOS and PFHxS. The public works superintendent said no report tells residents not to drink the water, and that filtering is recommended, not required. If you want a filter, buy one certified for those chemicals.

Jobs We Line Up for Chillicothe Houses
Older Blocks by the Rock Island Depot and the River Flats
The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 estimate puts the median build year at 1964, with 20 percent of homes from before 1940. The older blocks sit near the river end of town, around the old Rock Island depot at Cedar and 3rd and the Town Theater on North 2nd, and laterals there may be clay.

The town sits at about 528 feet on the river bottom, below the bluffs, and the BNSF line crosses the Illinois here. The National Weather Service ties local trouble to the river gauge at Peoria: parts of River Beach Drive and Second Street flood at 24.5 feet, Layne Crossing and North Street close at 25.1, and several houses around Chillicothe and Rome are cut off at 26.5. The river reached 29.35 feet at that gauge in April 2013, a record, and hit 28.0 in May 2019. Cold adds its own risk, since the Peoria area averages 26.6 inches of snow a year and lines on outside walls take the cold first.
If the river is high, tell us when you call. Groundwater rises with it, so sump pits work harder and floor drains can turn slow. We would rather check the sump and the floor drain before the next storm than after. Our post on tree roots in sewer lines explains the signs.
No Bridge at Chillicothe: Why Our Route Runs Through Peoria
No road crosses the Illinois River at Chillicothe, and Washington is on the east side. So we cross at Peoria, usually the McClugage Bridge on US 150, then drive Illinois 29 north on Galena Road. It becomes 4th Street in town.
The trip is 18 miles and about 25 minutes in normal conditions. A freight train on the BNSF line can hold us up, and in a flood year the closed streets near the river can too. Shore Acres Park, Three Sisters Park and the Fourth Street museum all make good reference points when you describe where you are.
Water, Sewer and Whom to Call
The city handles water through its public works department. Sewer treatment has been handled by the Greater Chillicothe Sanitary District of Peoria County, which bid aeration piping work in 2023. A plumber must hold an Illinois license to repair plumbing, and the IDPH lookup confirms a number in a minute. We also serve Peoria County.
