Plumbing in Springfield, IL is the longest drive we list: about 79 miles and 100 minutes from our Washington base by I-155 and I-55. Call first so we can tell you whether and when we can reach you, and know that we do not promise emergency response. A city this size has plumbers close by, so we are only a fit for planned sewer cleaning, camera inspection and repairs.
Springfield Plumbing Where 140 Miles of Sewers Still Carry Both
Springfield's older neighborhoods run on combined sewers, about 140 miles of them by the city's count, with roughly 355 miles of separate sanitary sewers in newer parts. Nearly one home in five, 10,166 of 57,424, dates to 1939 or earlier (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024). The city's Sewer Division maintains the mains and the Sangamon County Water Reclamation District treats the flow.
In 2023 the city proposed a pilot in northeast Springfield, under a U.S. EPA administrative order, to find defects and improper connections feeding sanitary overflows. The pilot area runs from Sangamon Avenue south to East Ridgely Avenue, between North 19th and North 22nd streets. Downspouts and sump lines tied into a sanitary line can add clear water the pipe was never sized for, and a connection like that sits on the private side.
The city also sits on a flat plain of glacial till near the Sangamon River, and flat ground moves storm water slowly. That adds to the load on a combined main when a big rain arrives.

Lake Springfield Water Is CWLP, the Sewer Is Not
City Water, Light & Power is the municipal utility that supplies electricity and drinking water from Lake Springfield. It does not run your sewer, so a backup call goes to the city's sewer division, not CWLP. Your private lateral is a third thing, and it is yours. If you need a plumber, ask for the Illinois license number and verify it on the IDPH lookup.
Old Coal Under the Capital and CWLP's Lead Line Backlog
The state geological survey's mine records say mines underlie much of Springfield. The Springfield Coal seam lies 200 to 260 feet down, and the last mine in the mapped area was abandoned in 1964. Sangamon County is on the state's list of 34 counties where property policies carry subsidence coverage unless the owner turned it down in writing, so check yours if ground movement ever enters the picture.
Lead is the larger day-to-day question. CWLP's revised 2026 plan estimates 9,201 lead service lines remain, concentrated in properties built before 1930, which points to historic areas such as Enos Park and Aristocracy Hill. The Illinois EPA's fourth award, $2,890,226 in 2025, is expected to replace about 400 lines (NPR Illinois). Ask CWLP whether your address qualifies before paying for a private replacement.
I-155 and I-55 South, 100 Minutes Out
From Washington we reach I-74 near Morton, take I-155 south to I-55, then follow I-55 past Lincoln to Springfield's exits, numbered 88 to 100. A trip that long only makes sense for work we can book. If water is rising now, close the main shutoff valve and call a plumber in Springfield first, then call us about a follow-up.

“Monte and Hunter came out on a Sunday (morning no less!) to help us with a mess from a backed up sewer. Lots of roots! They used two different sized cutters with a monster snake and cleaned it out all the way to the city sewer. We'd had another "sewer service" a few weeks ago and the experience was night and day different. I definitely recommend them.”
“Gary at Professional Sewer & Drain Services successfully bailed me out of a backed up sewer multiple times. Great guy and reasonable rates - very trustworthy!”
“Called at 4pm, clean out was finished by 7:30! Very reasonably priced. Monty was great!”
