Plumbing in Normal, IL is a long way from our Washington base: about 31 miles and 40 minutes by I-74. Call first so we can say whether and when we can reach you, and understand that we do not promise emergency response here. Normal's housing is newer and far more rented than most towns we list, so planned drain, fixture and water heater work fits best.

Normal Plumbing in a Young, Rental-Heavy Town

Only 1,115 of Normal's 22,215 homes, about 5%, date to 1939 or earlier, and the median home was built in 1989 (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024). Nearly a third of the housing dates from 2000 onward. Expect fewer root-choked clay laterals than in older towns, and more fixture, drain and water heater work.

Illinois State University is here, and 9,220 of 20,387 occupied homes, 45%, are rented. When a rental changes tenants or owners, a camera record and a planned maintenance visit give the owner facts to work from.

Wells, Softened Water and Separate Sewers

Normal does not use lake water. The Town's water department runs a lime softening plant fed by 12 wells, and the Bloomington-Normal Water Reclamation District treats the sewage. The Town maintains its own storm and sanitary sewers as separate systems, and clear water in the sanitary line causes backups, so sump pump connections to it are illegal.

Hardness varies by supply, and the Town's annual water quality report lists it. Pump discharge belongs on the lawn, not in a drain.

Relining 27,992 Feet of Sewer and Retiring the Last Lead Lines

Normal is relining sanitary sewers instead of digging them up. The Town's 2026 Phase 1 bid covers about 27,992 feet of cured-in-place lining, a resin liner hardened inside the old pipe, plus about 21 lateral rehabilitations and point repairs. That is Town-contracted work on the public system, not a repair you arrange. If your drains change after a crew has been on your street, start with Public Works.

Lead is close to finished here. The Town reports fewer than 75 residences with lead service lines and replaces them in coordination with homeowners, through the Water Department. Older rentals are worth asking about when ownership changes.

Winter guidance comes from the Town as well: drain irrigation and hose valves before the cold arrives, identify the shutoff inside the home, and leave a small trickle running while temperatures stay below freezing. Landlords should put that shutoff location in the move-in notes.

Plumbing Questions in Normal

Can I connect my sump pump to the sanitary sewer in Normal?
No. The Town of Normal says connecting a sump pump to the sanitary sewer is illegal, because clear water adds load and causes backups for everyone. Discharge has to go outside and away from the foundation. If your pump currently ties into a drain pipe, call us and we can look at rerouting it as a planned job.
Who do I call first when the sewer main backs up in Normal?
Call the Town of Normal's Public Works, which sends a Sewer Division worker to check the public main during business hours. After 5 p.m. and on weekends the town routes those calls through the police department front desk. That tells you whether the main or your own lateral is at fault. Then call us for planned work on the private line.
Do you come to Normal for landlords with several units?
Call first. Normal is about 31 miles and 40 minutes from our Washington base, so a trip works best when jobs are grouped: line cleaning, a camera record, water heaters or fixtures. We cannot promise emergency response there, but we can tell you which day a planned visit would fit.
